Forneskja
What is deemed old is yet unforgotten. Some say the gods of old are lost to the distant past, that they abandoned us or we abandoned them. It is true that even the gods die for it tells us this in the final battle. But are they all really gone? One's experience in this life can surely prove that they never truly went away. We need not to exercise this proof to others for we can find wholeness within their favor. We can draw from their strength, guidance and wisdom. A simple invocation to them is a gesture of gratitude, one of which will not go unseen.
The old heroic past is also timeless. It is present in our struggle to secure life for ourselves and for our children. We do not conquer ourselves completely alone. The old Heathen time does not seem so far away after all. As the wheels of the year turn, as the cycles continue, the closer the gods of yore make themselves more apparent and real in our time. What best explains the mysteries of our story is sometimes right under our noses, in our own wells, and contained within our own blood.
Forneskja. As attractive as it is to look back into the ancient past and glean many treasures, to romanticize about a time no longer, to perhaps fill a glaring void in our modern times by stuffing ourselves with a longing nostalgia for something we only imagine it to have been... As attractive as it sounds I put forth that our folk memory, the ancient vestiges that crop up from time to time that remind us of our beautiful story, serves as a necessary compass in navigating this world which enables further communion with the gods. This present communion to our divine powers remedies being stuck in a perpetual state of "looking back." It breathes fresh life into our present story. The pendulum does swing and it appears the pathways and gateways to our gods are opening once again.
A healthy respect and reverence for history and tradition is worthwhile and commendable. The seekers and spiritual archeologists have inexhaustible material to draw from. We also have our current story as well. We don't need to look to outer shores to accept the inner workings of the gods in our lives. I see a reclamation and a new forging of Germanic religious attitude. A reunion of Forneskja meeting with our current spiritual state.
Heil Wotan!
