Without archaeological evidence of ANY KIND confirming its existence in the ancient world, this symbol is, by all accounts, A NAZI INVENTION.
Similar to other wheels that did exist in the ancient world as solar representations, the design used by the German SS is composed of two concentric circles. The inner circle has the shape of a sun from which twelve rays radiate (which may represent the translational movement of the sun or the seasonal moons of the traditional pagan wheel of the year). The twelve rays reach the outer circle, where their angles twist, forming, at the same time, two symbols of key importance in Nazi mysticism: the swastika and the Sig or Sigel runes, the rune of victory distorted from the Armanen futhark, whose double representation also forms the emblem of the SS.
The myth of the Black Sun already existed in the Völkisch mentality of the turn of the century, imported from Madame Blavatsky's theosophy, but was enriched by the personal mythology or rather the ravings of the Austrian Karl Maria Wiligut, known as "Himmler's Rasputin." Nazi occultism corrupted the concept that, according to Blavatsky, was an ancient belief originating in Egypt about two mystical and spiritual "suns," one of which was made of pure gold and was accessible to all races and granted them growth and prosperity. The other sun, the Black Sun, was a veiled source of knowledge and enlightenment for which not all races were prepared, but which one should aspire to in view of the end of time.
The Santur in verse 27 of Halgarita Sprüche, a collection of unintelligible mantras written by Wiligut to awaken ancestral memory, has been interpreted as referring to the famous Black Sun. According to its followers, Santur was a second sun that shone 230,000 years ago over the Hyperboreans at the North Pole and promoted their spiritual development; it still orbits near our planet as an extinct star, invisible but emitting a powerful intelligence.
The Ariosophists twisted these and other ideas from earlier mythology and mysticism to support their beliefs in a superior race, arcane knowledge, Vril energy and other delusions.
In reality there are no testimonies or documents that link the Black Sun myth with the design that appears on the floor mosaic in the “hall of the lieutenant generals” of Wewelsburg castle; but the drawing, which is actually green, undoubtedly fueled the legend and gave rise to the most widespread version of the symbol. Wewelsburg was built in the 17th century and renovated by the SS to become the “centre of the world”, a place of worship to which only the initiated had access and the heart of the new racial religion that would replace Christianity.
The symbol was never used publicly, but was reserved for the most exclusive knowledge and ceremonies. It was only in the 1990s that some right-wing authors began to write about it, calling it the Black Sun. Today it still has deep meanings, mostly for people with extremist and racist inclinations.
